Five teams from the Southern US have arrived in Houston, TX to make a run for a National Club Championship berth. Both men's and women's teams are contesting for two spots. Friday opened the tournament with two games each for both the men and the women, and it was clear from the start that the competition would be fierce.
The women's teams for Atlanta (GA) and Triangle (NC) opened the competition, in what was to be a very close match. Atlanta took the match 1-0 and secured the first points for the tournament.
Lonestar (TX) and Dallas (TX) opened with the all Texans men's match. Lonestar came out strong and with relentless offensive, setting Dallas into their defensive posture . Lonestar scored 5 goals to win the match, but Dallas showed they came to play battling into the Lonestar circle and scoring 1 goal before time expired. A 5-1 result for Lonestar.
The Lonestar women took on the far traveling Miami Surf (FL) women in the next match. Miami and Lonestar kept a fairly even back and forth with excellent defensive showings by both teams. While the offensive players kept the match moving hard, the defense won the day for both teams, ending the match in a 0-0 draw. Should make for interesting matches on Saturday as these two defensive power houses face other competition with different offensive postures.
Day 1 closed out with the Miami Surf men taking on the Atlanta men. Another even match and a another even result. The men finished regular time in the pool play match at 1-1.
Saturday will be the determining day, with the leaderboard standing with the Lonestar men and the Atlanta women at the top position, thanks to their outright wins.
